Featured Artist of the Week - John Dempsey

  JOHN R. DEMPSEY
John R. Dempsey was born 1975 in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and the Florence Academy of Art. He has been an apprentice to Ben Long since 2002. His specialty is portraiture, but he also works in landscape and figures. He teaches portraiture and cast drawing at the Fine Arts League.

“Drawing is the key element of great painting. The ability to describe the nuances of form with a simple tool such as a piece of charcoal prepares the painter for the problems which arise when attempting to display the subtle beauty of nature. Accurate demonstration of nature’s beauty is the hallmark of a great work.”  JRD

Today we had the pleasure of hosting an event with several of the spouses of Governor's from the Southeast at the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas. Our Presenters were Rebecca King and Michael Smith. Demonstrations were given by Mark Henry and Roger Nelson. Melissa Jacobs, Marion Vidal, Lily Beard and Paul Blankinship were in attendance representing a few of the students. Mimosas, strawberries and chocolate were served. Each spouse signed in our registry and were given a detailed brochure regarding the event and information regarding the Vadim Bora Scholarship. Ken Richards coordinated the group. It was a wonderful opportunity to have these distinguished guests in our school to hear and see why the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas is so different from any other art school one may attend in the US. Michael Smith of the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas

Michael James Smith grew up in Baltimore, MD. In his youth he had the privilege of being instructed by teachers from the Maryland Institute of Art and later was affiliated with Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. After moving to Miami, FL he became a working artist with drawings and paintings in various media being shown in galleries and acquired by private collectors.

Upon moving to Asheville, NC in 1995, Michael focused his talents on figurative drawing. Over the course of the next few years, Michael continued his figure studies, and had the good fortune to meet and become friends with Ben Long. This eventually led to a position as a founding member of the fine arts league of Asheville, now known as The Fine Arts League of the Carolinas. His extensive knowledge of anatomy is reflected in his love of teaching his in-depth course of the Fine Arts League.

Michael is extremely talented and well versed in anatomy which makes his art come to life!
