TED Speaker, Author & Founder of National Institute for Play: Dr. Stuart L. Brown

introduces Dr. Stuart L. Brown to discuss the affects of PLAY and ART on the Brain.

WHERE: Diana Wortham Theatre, 2 South Pack Square, Asheville, NC 28801
DATE & TIME: Wednesday, October 19th, 2011 at 7:00 PM
TICKETS: Available at Diana Wortham Theatre at
http://www.dwtheatre.com/box-office/ticket-information.
COST: Educators, Students & Seniors: $15.00 Adults: $25.00

Stuart L. Brown, MD trained in General and Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and Clinical research.

Upon his broad based evaluations of highly creative individuals, he revealed the centrality of playfulness to their success and well-being. Dr. Brown broadened his scope of interest to include the evolution and nature of play behavior, and its manifestations in human story and art. This led to a long-term affiliation with mythologist scholar, Joseph Campbell.

The National Geographic Society sponsored Dr. Stuart Brown's exploration of animal play in the wild, resulting in his authoring a Society magazine cover article and the production of an Explorer TV program, each on animal play behavior.

Dr. Brown's recent years of independent scholarship and exploration of the evolution and neuroscience of human and animal play have helped to focus a central commitment bringing the promises and stories of play into general cultural consciousness and to the establishment of the National Institute for Play (NIFP). (www.nifplay.org)

Dr. Brown has authorized the recently released Avery/Penguin Book, PLAY: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination and Invigorates the Soul.

This lecture/event assuredly sheds a different light on the importance of art for all persons no matter what their age!

Fine Arts League Gallery presents Paul Blankinship Oct. 14th @ 6 PM :: Fine Arts League of the Carolinas | MyNewsletterBuilder

THE STRONG IMAGE
Painting and Drawings

Friday, October 14th at its gallery
in the Historic Grove Arcade, 1 Page Avenue, Ste. 115
in downtown Asheville, North Carolina.

Time: 6 pm - 8 pm
Opening Reception: 6 pm

Born in Richmond, Va., Paul Blankinship grew up in Virginia and North Carolina, shunning the company of grown-ups for that of forest, swamp and open water.
The great gift of his childhood was access to the landscape, at first through hunting and fishing with his maternal grandfather, and later, exploration for its own sake.  In time, he gained an acquaintance with wilderness, farmland, abandoned areas, and places in between.
Blankinship studied drawing while a teenager under Phyllis Biddle in Richmond before attending the College of William and Mary and Duke University, where he earned degrees in English and theology, respectively.  He currently studies painting at The Fine Arts League of the Carolinas.  His work is collected in the United States and the United Kingdom.
“Persuasion in a realist landscape is in the handling of the air.  Time and atmosphere do not merely surround and wash over a landscape; they are the landscape just as much as the place is, as things are.  I paint them because they deserve regard.”
Paul Blankinship’s landscapes in oil arrest the viewer by telling the truth and giving thanks at the same time.  He paints places by placing moments.  Words cannot do this.
Paul Blankinship paints the North Carolina landscape with accuracy and evocation.  He fixes vision and atmosphere in dust, oil and sinew, making the foreign accessible and the common arresting.
