Fine Arts League Gallery presents Paul Blankinship Oct. 14th @ 6 PM :: Fine Arts League of the Carolinas | MyNewsletterBuilder

THE STRONG IMAGE
Painting and Drawings

Friday, October 14th at its gallery
in the Historic Grove Arcade, 1 Page Avenue, Ste. 115
in downtown Asheville, North Carolina.

Time: 6 pm - 8 pm
Opening Reception: 6 pm

Born in Richmond, Va., Paul Blankinship grew up in Virginia and North Carolina, shunning the company of grown-ups for that of forest, swamp and open water.
The great gift of his childhood was access to the landscape, at first through hunting and fishing with his maternal grandfather, and later, exploration for its own sake.  In time, he gained an acquaintance with wilderness, farmland, abandoned areas, and places in between.
Blankinship studied drawing while a teenager under Phyllis Biddle in Richmond before attending the College of William and Mary and Duke University, where he earned degrees in English and theology, respectively.  He currently studies painting at The Fine Arts League of the Carolinas.  His work is collected in the United States and the United Kingdom.
“Persuasion in a realist landscape is in the handling of the air.  Time and atmosphere do not merely surround and wash over a landscape; they are the landscape just as much as the place is, as things are.  I paint them because they deserve regard.”
Paul Blankinship’s landscapes in oil arrest the viewer by telling the truth and giving thanks at the same time.  He paints places by placing moments.  Words cannot do this.
Paul Blankinship paints the North Carolina landscape with accuracy and evocation.  He fixes vision and atmosphere in dust, oil and sinew, making the foreign accessible and the common arresting.

Featured Artist of the Week - John Dempsey

  JOHN R. DEMPSEY
John R. Dempsey was born 1975 in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and the Florence Academy of Art. He has been an apprentice to Ben Long since 2002. His specialty is portraiture, but he also works in landscape and figures. He teaches portraiture and cast drawing at the Fine Arts League.

“Drawing is the key element of great painting. The ability to describe the nuances of form with a simple tool such as a piece of charcoal prepares the painter for the problems which arise when attempting to display the subtle beauty of nature. Accurate demonstration of nature’s beauty is the hallmark of a great work.”  JRD

You may read more about John Dempsey and the other Fine Art Instructors by linking to our website at: www.FineArtsLeague.Org or telephone our office at (828) 252-5050, Eastern Standard Time in the U.S.

This week's Featured Artist at The Fine Arts League of the Carolinas

Mark Henry
Mark Henry Bio
Born in Merced, California, Mark traveled extensively with his military family. In his youth he lived in all but a few of the United States and spent his teenage years in Okinawa. After attending Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL, the artist became a private student and assistant to Mr. Leslie Posey, a nationally acclaimed sculptor and ornamentalist.
During the late 1970s Mark studied design in nature and the human form, ornamental architecture, casting and mold-making using the traditional methods. In the early 1980s he worked and studied under Ted Nightwine, the chief conservator of the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, learning framework restoration. A twist of fate led him to Hagenbeck/Wallace Inc., the company that designs and builds props for the Ringling Brothers Circus and Disney Ice Shows.
The mountains have lured the artist by way of their power and beauty, and the Henrys now live in Weaverville, NC. Along with his love of painting, Mark also teaches several times a year at various schools and workshops, and is presently designing and crafting his own frames for his paintings. Mark's work in pastel and oil is represented in galleries in North Carolina and Georgia as well as numerous private collections in the United States and abroad.

Sign up for one of Mark Henry's Fundamental Drawing or Fundamental Painting courses for Fall 2011 at The Fine Arts League of the Carolinas. See more at: www.FineArtsLeague.Org Mark Henry's work can also be seen and purchased at 16 Patton Fine Art Gallery in the Grove Arcade.
